Self-renewal of peripheral nerve resident macrophage: does it represent a unique activation status?

  Long-term PNS resident macrophages self-renew, albeit at a slow turnover rate. After nerve injury, they enter a state of more frequent proliferation, perhaps for constituting a local army for nerve repair (Figure 1).
