Abstract: At the beginning of the 16th century, Paracelsus coined the maxim: “the dose makes the poison”. This principle can be applied to all living organisms, including organs and cells. The brain and its glial and neuronal cells are no exception. Even small compounds that are essential for the life of brain cells can become truly toxic when overdosed.
