Abstract: Spinal cord injury (SCI) is a debilitating ailment that leads to the loss of motor and sensory functions, often leaving the patient paralyzed below the injury site (Chen et al., 2013). Globally around 250,000–300,000 people are diagnosed with SCI annually (Singh et al., 2014), and while this number appears quite low, the effect that an SCI has on the patient’s quality of life is drastic, due to the current difficulties to comprehensively treat this illness. The cost of patient care can also be quite costly, amounting to an estimated $1.69 billion in healthcare costs in the USA alone (Mahabaleshwarkar and Khanna, 2014).
